Itinerary
April 25th Bridge
The bridge over the Tagus River was built in 1966, and its name was changed after the 1974 revolution.
The bridge is very long and has a very long span (it's the longest in Europe). It looks very impressive from all directions with amazing views.
Sesimbra – Castle
The town was founded around the Moorish castle Dom Afonso Henriques captured in 1165. The castle fell back into Moorish hands in 1191, but was recaptured by Dom Sancho I in the 13th century and donated to the Order of St. James for defense and settlement. It was restored in the 18th century and is now a very important place to visit for admiring a beautiful view of the town and the sea.
The local food here is especially good at cooking seafood and fresh fish. There are many restaurants in town where you can taste this delicious food.
Azeitao is a village with a lot of curiosities. Above all, there are delicacies like the Cheese of Azeitao, which is a Portuguese cheese that many people think is the best. There are other Portuguese "conventual" sweets like the Torta de Azeitao, and of course their wines. One of the most famous products from this area is the Moscatel wine, and it's common to find it in Palmela and Setubal. Moscatel is a type of white wine and it's associated with the production of white wines.
Tile factory - Azulejos de Azeitão make tiles using the traditional European methods, and often reproduce antique designs from countries all over the world, including Europe, Islam, and China. The factory will reproduce historical designs for individual resale or custom orders.
Jose Maria da Fonseca (Local Winery). The House Museum José Maria da Fonseca was built in the XIX century and was restored in 1923 by the Swiss architect Ernesto Korrodi. It was the residence of the Soares Franco family until 1974. The House Museum has a very special façade and beautiful gardens. It is often associated with the image of José Maria da Fonseca.
Setubal, a city where fishing and boats were very important for centuries. There are lots of shops in the city center where you can find things for all ages, from global brands to local brands. There are also specialist shops where you can find unusual products, and the city's culture is everywhere you look.
Bocage square
The square is named after a famous poet and dramatist who was born in the city. The square is north of the River Sado and used to be the site of a Roman fish salting factory. Archaeological evidence has been found to support this.
Arrabida Natural Park
The Arrábida Natural Park is located next to the sea and is between Setúbal and the fishing town of Sesimbra. It has beautiful natural beauty with blue sea water and white chalk cliffs, and deep green vegetation covering the mountain range.
The Park has other mountain ranges, such as the Serra do Risco, which contains the highest peak on the Portuguese mainland coast. This mountain range has a beautiful cliff that overlooks the sea, and from which you can have a stunning panoramic view over the Atlantic.
The action of the waves against the mountains has created a line of beaches with fine sand and clear water. These beaches are similar to those found in the Mediterranean, such as Figueirinha, Galapos, and the Portinho da Arrábida.
